Viewing Email from a Takeout Archive

To view email that was archived using Google Takeout, follow these instructions.

Locate the takeout .zip file
Download the file onto your local computer
Unzip the file
Inside the unzipped folder you will see a .mbox file. This is the email archive.
You have a couple of options to open the .mbox file. I recommend using Thunderbird. Download and install the app here: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/. You might need to get permission to install - contact the IT department.

Alternatively, for the Mac, you can use Apple Mail, which is already installed:
1. Open MBOX files in Apple Mail
2. On your Mac, open the Mail application.
3. In the File menu, select Import Mailboxes.
4. In the new pane that appears, select Files in mbox format from the option list, and hit Continue.
5. In the next window that appears, navigate to your previously saved MBOX file, select it and hit Choose.
6. In a new window, Apple Mail will confirm where you can find the newly imported MBOX file, and you can select Done to close the window.
