Viewing Email from a Takeout Archive
To view email that was archived using Google Takeout, follow these instructions.
- Locate the takeout .zip file
- Download the file onto your local computer
- Unzip the file
- Inside the unzipped folder you will see a .mbox file. This is the email archive.

- You have a couple of options to open the .mbox file. I recommend using Thunderbird. Download and install the app here: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/. You might need to get permission to install - contact the IT department.
- Open MBOX files in Thunderbird, follow the instructions in this article: https://documentation.its.umich.edu/mbox-thunderbird
- Alternatively, for the Mac, you can use Apple Mail, which is already installed:
- Open MBOX files in Apple Mail
- On your Mac, open the Mail application.
- In the File menu, select Import Mailboxes.
- In the new pane that appears, select Files in mbox format from the option list, and hit Continue.
- In the next window that appears, navigate to your previously saved MBOX file, select it and hit Choose.
- In a new window, Apple Mail will confirm where you can find the newly imported MBOX file, and you can select Done to close the window.
